A West Country-based business advisory firm is strengthening its expertise in corporate tax with a key senior appointment.

Michael Hesketh has been appointed as Head of Tax for Baldwins in the West Country, which has offices in South Moulton and Holsworthy and also includes the Potter Baker offices in Launceston and Tavistock.

The Chartered Tax Advisor joins Baldwins after six years at a Top 25 accountancy practice based in London and the South east where he was Corporation Tax Advisory Director.  He brings almost 15 years of corporate tax compliance and advisory experience dealing with a variety of companies in all sectors ranging from start-ups through to multi-national entities.

The newly-created role will see Michael using his tax expertise and commercial experience to expand Baldwins’ corporate tax compliance and advisory offering to businesses across Devon and Cornwall.

This will cover, for example, areas such as employee share schemes to incentivise staff, reorganisation and restructuring, complex capital allowance claims and relief for research and development activities, through to assisting from a tax perspective on the sale and purchase of companies and businesses.

“Baldwins has an enviable client base across Devon and Cornwall, but there are masses of potential in all sectors across the region which I am looking forward to tapping into,” said Michael, who has re-located his family from Kent to North Devon.

“The UK has one of the most complex tax systems in the world where the rules are constantly changing, and I am extremely passionate about helping businesses to not only comply with the law, but also help them identify tax incentives and reliefs that can help them to not only mitigate their costs but to help them grow.

“My immediate focus is identifying the needs of our existing client base to see where we can provide added value, before contacting other businesses across the region to see if they are maximising tax reliefs that are available to them.”

Matthew Gard, regional managing partner for Baldwins in the West Country, which acquired South Molton and Holsworthy-based Davisons last year commented: “Securing someone of Michael’s corporate expertise is the next step in Baldwins’ aim to be the leading business advisory group in the West Country, and his appointment is a fantastic coup for us and our clients.

“Davisons and Potter Baker’s entry into the Baldwins Group initially enabled us to collectively offer additional services to our clients, and now with Michael on board we can look to use his expertise and experience to expand our reach into all sectors even further.”
