Stormburst Studios Life after KickStart…Two Years on

Posted by David Baldwin

In 2015, Stormburst Studios entered the Baldwins Young Entrepreneur Awards, successfully making it through to the final three contestants. Stormburst Studios is a software developer founded in 2014 by two former students from De Montfort University in Leicester.

Although Stormburst didn’t win on the night, both runners up received £5,000 worth of mentoring and accountancy advice. Derry Holt Co-founder and CEO of Stormburst Studios explains, two years later, how the KickStart Awards has helped the company and encourages other young people to apply.

Two years on the company’s progress is clear to see. Derry Holt of Stormburst said “Before the awards, we were at the point where we had no products, only screenshots of our ideas. We now have our final products along with new offices and five new members of staff. We have also received a £150,000 investment from Mercia Technologies since the award night.”

“Getting through to the finals meant a lot to us. It brought us a lot of motivation and helped us find our feet. We actually met our first paying client on the night which was great. Thanks to this event, we got the company started and it gave us confidence in the company too. It was good to have someone say ‘I’ve seen what your plan looks like and how it’s going to work.”

Stormburst praise the opportunities Baldwins KickStart and it has given them. They explain how the £5,000 worth of mentoring and accountancy advice has helped their company. “It was a massive help to us, especially having someone who knows what they are doing. It made everything a lot less daunting and the whole process a whole lot easier. It has greatly contributed to our success today as we got the advice and help we needed to do better.”

Derry explains the KickStart process and urges young businesses to apply. “Definitely apply, it’s free exposure and a chance to win. The event night was a chance to meet potential clients and a fun night overall. Applying for KickStart was easy, after going through the online application process and submitting our business plan, we were shortlisted and invited for an informal chat with David Baldwin to discuss our plan. We also received ongoing support and guidance all the way up until the awards. I would definitely recommend to anybody starting up a new business to enter Kickstart.”
